Human Services

Program Description

The human services program prepares students to provide appropriate services to those in need, to empower others to help themselves, and to enhance the quality of life for all people.

Student Learning Outcomes

Human Services graduates are prepared to:

  • Apply theories, tools, and skills required in industry.
  • Apply Human Service values and ethical decision-making.
  • Demonstrate research, communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrate cultural knowledge and awareness skills to engage with local and global communities in the provision of Human Services.

Admissions Information

Admission to the Human Services Program is selective. Applicants are required to have a college application on file in the registrar’s office. Applicants must provide proof of one of the following: a minimum ACT score of 19 in reading and writing, or MAPS that are the minimums: M-234, L-223, R-223. For more detailed information on the admissions process, please contact a program advisor.

Perspective students should be aware that human services agencies may perform criminal background checks, as well as Department of Health and Human Services child abuse and vulnerable adult abuse registry checks. The results of these background checks may prevent employment at that agency or facility.
Individuals considering a degree in the human services and/or chemical dependency should be aware of strict practicum admission qualifications. Criminal Background Checks, Adult Protective Services/Child Protective Services background checks and a Drug Test are conducted before practicum placement is offered. The College reserves the right to share the results of these background checks with any institution at which student intends to participate in a practicum experience. This practice is consistent with Nebraska state statutes.

Students with issues identified through the background checks may have a difficult time locating an appropriate practicum site. Perspective students should be aware that practicum placement is not guaranteed and as such, could delay or prevent the completion of the degree.

Notes:

  • Students are required to earn a minimum of a “C” in each of their program and general education courses in order for them to apply for a diploma or degree. Students may refer to the Human Services program manual for additional program expectations and requirements.
  • Selected courses required for Alcohol/Drug Counseling are offered through the Grand Island campus and online. Course work in this area may be applied toward human services degree requirements with advisor approval.
  • Additional program costs include student-in-practicum insurance, a background check and drug testing.
  • Immunizations may be required; see program advisor for the specific immunizations needed.
