Paramedicine

Program Description

The Paramedicine program is designed to prepare students for employment in a variety of positions within Emergency Medical Services including government, hospital based and private ambulance services, hospitals, and patient transport services; along with the ability to serve as volunteer with specifically designated ambulance service. The program provides advanced life support training to an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) who is proficient and knowledgeable of the skills involved with basic life support. 

Successful completion will prepare graduates to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), certifying examination for Paramedics; this is required by the State of Nebraska as a component for initial state licensure.

Student Learning Outcomes

Paramedicine graduates are prepared to:

• Identify with the professional practices and patient advocacy.
• Demonstrate appropriate techniques for patient assessment.
• Determine appropriate interventions based upon accurate patient assessments.
• Implement the proper utilization of equipment based upon patient assessment and following applicable level scope of practice.

Paramedic Minimum Expectation:To prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels.

Admission Information

Admission to the Paramedicine program is selective. Applicants are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent, submit official transcripts of transferable course work and complete the required assessment (ACT, COMPASS, ASSET or ACCUPLACER). Applicants must hold a current EMT license/certification as well as American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR card or equivalent. In addition, the applicant must complete an admissions interview with the EMS Program Director and meet the Essential Functions of the job.

Note

• Immunizations are required, see program director for the specific immunizations needed.
• Required to earn a C or above for all courses needed for graduation including general education courses.
• Students are required to complete a background check and drug testing (at student’s expense). Admission to the program is contingent on the results of the check.
• A non-refundable fee is applied directly to student tuition expenses when registering for PARM 1020. This fee is to support the Fisdap program that tracks student and program accreditation requirements. Please see program webpage for more details.
