  • PHRM 1110 - Introduction to Pharmacy Technology

    The following course must be taken before or at the same time: PHRM 1120 - Principles of Pharmacology , PHRM 1130 - Pharmacy Practice Lab , PHRM 1220 - Prescription Basics  
    The course will introduce the role of a pharmacy technician in a variety of health care settings, hospital, retail, long-term care. Students will be introduced to a variety of health care systems, in particular, the role of the pharmacy. Discover what is expected of becoming a pharmacy technician and a wide and general understanding of the pharmacy technician’s scope of practice.

  • PHRM 1120 - Principles of Pharmacology

    The following course must be taken before or at the same time: PHRM 1110 - Introduction to Pharmacy Technology , PHRM 1130 - Pharmacy Practice Lab , PHRM 1220 - Prescription Basics  
     
    Study body parts and systems and common disease states of each major system.  The student will learn various drug dosage forms, routes of administration.  The student will become familiar with top 200 commonly prescribed drugs.  Understand common drugs, pronunciation, interactions that treat each major body system diseases.   The student will study classification, common side effects and interactions of generally prescribed medications for each major body system.  Study basic biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of medication.  Identify common drug information resources.

  • PHRM 1130 - Pharmacy Practice Lab

    The following course must be taken before or at the same time: PHRM 1110 - Introduction to Pharmacy Technology ,PHRM 1120 Principles of Pharmacology , PHRM 1130 - Pharmacy Practice Lab , PHRM 1220 - Prescription Basics 
     
    Understand similarities and differences between different types of pharmacy settings. Study of different pharmacy practice settings, payment systems, dispensing considerations study the purpose of policies and procedures appropriate for the setting. Proper and effective professional communications will be emphasized. The lab is a comprehensive pharmacy lab. The student will learn/practice different aspects of the pharmacy technician jobs in different pharmacy settings including order preparation, filling and delivery to the end user.

  • PHRM 1210 - Law & Ethics for Pharmacy Technicians

    Define state and federal pharmacy laws, standards of practice and professional ethics. Learn about standards for the workplace and professionalism. Students will understand the legal, scope of practice and the limitations as it relates to pharmacy tech position. Students will study the agencies that regulate pharmacy practice.

  • PHRM 1220 - Prescription Basics

    Prerequisite (taken before): PHRM 1110 - Introduction to Pharmacy Technology , PHRM 1120 - Principles of Pharmacology , PHRM 1130 - Pharmacy Practice Lab  
    The student will learn how to read and interpret prescription/medical orders. Become familiar with common prescription abbreviations. Learn methods of receiving medication order and prescriptions. How to determine prescription priority. Understand fundamentals of taking patient profiles, processing of medication orders in different pharmacy settings. Understand time and workflow, stress and change management skills and using critical thinking skills to solve problems common in the pharmacy technician’s workday. Identify different types of medication errors and contributing factors and steps to be done to identify the errors. Understand quality assurance and steps to be taken when errors are identified.

  • PHRM 1230 - Sterile & Non-Sterile Compounding

    Prerequisite (taken before): PHRM 1110 - Introduction to Pharmacy Technology  
    Learn to identify and use appropriate equipment used in sterile and non-sterile compounding. Identify reasons of why a product would need to be compounded. Identify what products are needed to compound different sterile and non-sterile medications. Basic knowledge of injectable therapies will be explored. Learn and practice skills and techniques of compounding different preparations. Safe handling and compounding of hazardous drugs. Describe how USP 797 has impacted compounding of sterile medications.

  • PHRM 1240 - Pharmacy Technology Business Applications

    Prerequisite (taken before): PHRM 1110 - Introduction to Pharmacy Technology  
    Know the difference between durable and non-durable medical equipment. Students will learn the process of ordering, receiving, storing, dispensing, diversion and/or returning of legend and controlled substance medications, durable and non-durable medical equipment. Work within appropriate workplace policies and procedures to maintain inventory; process recalls and disposes of outdated and contaminated medications. Identify and learn about various durable and non-durable medical devices and the supplies needed for each.
