Medical Laboratory Technician


Program Description

The Medical Laboratory Technician program is designed to prepare individuals to enter a career as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). The medical laboratory technician is an important part of the health care team, they perform diagnostic testing that helps the physician determine the absence, presence, extent, or cause of disease. The program provides basic instruction in all areas of the clinical laboratory as well as additional experience and instruction in hospital and clinic laboratories. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the national certification offered by the Board of Certification. The program is accredited by the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), 5600 N. River Road, Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018-5119, 773-714-8880.

Student Learning Outcomes

Medical Laboratory Technician graduates are prepared to:

  • Comprehend the technical and procedural aspects of laboratory tests in the clinical areas of Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Urinalysis and Other Body Fluids, and Laboratory Operations.
  • Differentiate between principles and methodologies used for all major areas commonly used by a modern clinical laboratory.
  • Correlate laboratory results to diagnosis and treatment in the clinical areas of Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Urinalysis and Other Body Fluids.
  • Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct in all forms of communication.
  • Evaluate principles and practices of quality management.
  • Understand the significance of continued professional development.

Notes:

  • Immunizations are required; see program director for the specific immunizations needed.
  • The applicant must be aware of Essential Functions.
  • There are additional program costs for uniforms, student-in-practicum insurance, a background check and drug screen.
  • Required to earn a C or above for all courses needed for graduation including general education courses.
  • The Clinical Internship II occurs during the summer following the graduation ceremony. MLT students do not actually complete the program of study until approximately July 1st.
  • Students are required to complete a background check and drug screen (at student’s expense). Admission to the program is contingent on the results of the check and screen.
  • PreRequisites: BIOS 2250 - General Anatomy & Physiology I  AND BIOS 2260 - General Anatomy & Physiology II  with a “B” or higher.

Admissions Information

Admission to the medical laboratory technician program is selective.

  • Applicant must have on file a completed Central Community College application.
  • Applicant must complete the Medical Laboratory Technician (MEDT) supplemental application.
  • Applicant must schedule and attend an informational meeting with the MEDT Program Director or Instructor.
  • A student accepted into the Medical Laboratory Technician program must be a high school graduate or have passed a standard equivalency test.  A high school transcript or copy of the equivalent certificate must be supplied.  Contact the Student Services office if you need information about the standard equivalency test.
  • A minimum of the following college-level prerequisite courses are required. Students must receive a C or above in the prerequisite courses. College Algebra (3 hours)
  • Students must attain minimum scores on the ACT, Next Gen, MAPS, or Accuplacer test.
  • Students accepted into the program must attend the program orientation that typically occures in April or May. Invitation to the orientation will be emailed and mailed to the address on file with the program.
