Medical Assisting

Program Description

Medical assisting is a multi-skilled allied health profession whose practitioners work primarily in ambulatory settings such as medical offices and clinics. Medical assistants function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative and clinical procedures. Administrative and business function skills taught include: scheduling and receiving patients, maintaining medical records, correspondence, insurance materials, and computer use. Clinical and medical function skills taught include: assisting with examinations, treatments and minor surgery, performing office testing and laboratory procedures, preparing and maintaining examination and treatment rooms, and sterilizing and caring for instruments and equipment.

The Central Community College Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, 25400 US Highway 19 N, Suite 158, Clearwater, FL 33763, (727) 210-2350.

Graduates of the Medical Assisting program are encouraged to take the AAMA certification exam. Please contact the medical assisting program director for more information.

Student Learning Outcomes

Medical Assisting graduates are prepared to:

  • Work as a member of the health care team utilizing ethical principles, confidentiality, instruction for health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Perform the administrative skills in the operation of the medical office.
  • Perform the clinical skills in the operation of the medical office. 

Admissions Information

Admission to the medical assisting program is selective. Applicants are required to have a college application on file in the registrar’s office. Applicants must provide proof of one of the following: a minimum ACT score of 19 or above in all subcategories, or an ACCUPLACER, COMPASS, ASSET evaluation showing no prescriptive courses required, or college transcripts showing completion of no less than 12 hours of college level mathematics, English, or health science based course(s) with a cumulative GPA of 2.0. The applicant must also meet Essential Functions and complete an admissions interview with the program director. Notes:

  • Immunizations are required, see program director for the specific immunizations needed.
  • Additional program costs will be required for uniforms, a stethoscope, student-in practicum insurance, a background check, drug test and CPR Training.
  • A minimum grade of 2.0 is required for all medical assisting program required courses and a “C” for all other courses including general education courses.
  • Students are required to complete a background check and drug testing (at student’s expense). Admission to the program is contingent on the results of the check.
