Media Arts

Program Description

The Media Arts program at Central Community College is dedicated to providing the educational opportunities, the creative environment, and the professional experience necessary for students planning careers in broadcasting, graphic arts, photography, and video production.

The program is unique as it merges these fields into one course of study. While concentrating on a specialization, students are exposed to a range of opportunities that allow them to see how other media specialties are integrated into their field of study.

Note: Program available at the Hastings campus only

Student Learning Outcomes

Media Arts graduates are prepared to:

  • Display the specific skills necessary to produce professional broadcast, graphic art, photography or video projects.
  • Propose the most effective media for clients to reach their target demographic.
  • Choose industry-standard software appropriate for specific projects.
  • Promote client relationships through effective communication.
  • Use creative audio, graphics, images, or video to develop a digital portfolio.

Career Opportunities

Careers in the graphic arts include composition, layout and design, electronic imaging, bindery, and pre-press operations. Careers in commercial radio and television include announcing, advertising, production and news photography. Opportunities are also expanding in fields related to publishing on the web and multimedia production. Newspapers, broadcast stations, advertising agencies, and commercial print shops in the area offer many opportunities for potential employment. Media arts students can work with area professionals through cooperative education programs and internships. Career and employment services are provided by the college.

Typical Program of Study

To assist students in determining the sequence of courses they might take to complete their educational goal, the proposed program of study is provided. A student's final program of study will be influenced by factors such as placement test scores, prior college experiences, course availability, transfer requirements, program admission requirements, and special areas of interest. A student intending to major in this program must consult with his/her advisor prior to any academic planning and registering.
