Health Information Management Services

Program Description

Health information management represents a continuum of practice concerned with health related information and the management of systems to collect, store, process, retrieve, analyze, disseminate and communicate information related to research, planning, provision, and evaluation of health care services. Patient records in hospitals, clinics, and nursing facilities are the most common sources of health information; however, insurance companies and government agencies also maintain health information systems. The curriculum of the Health Information Management Services program (HIMS) incorporates the disciplines of medicine, management, finance, information technology, and law into the program.

Student Learning Outcomes

Health Information Management Services graduates are prepared to:

  • Validate healthcare data and data sources for accuracy, timeliness, and completeness.
  • Analyze health information for a quality, utilization, and risk management, and other patient care related studies.
  • Interpret and apply laws and accreditation, licensure, and certification standards.
  • Analyze the operation, application, and function of computers and related technology in the healthcare environment.
  • Apply administrative principles, skills, and techniques in a healthcare environment.

Career Opportunities

Constantly evolving regulations and technologies allow for lifelong learning and continued professional development.  As health care advances, health information provides the patient data needed to successfully navigate the changes.  As a result, health information professionals can expect to be in high demand as the health sector continues to expand.  Demand is on the rise at all levels of education and credentialing.  There are approximately 12,000 to 50,000 new jobs anticipated by 2017, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics cites medical records and health information technicians as one of the 20 fastest growing occupations in the U.S. Health Information graduates can choose from a variety of job functions across an array of health care environments.  Among these are medical records management, privacy officer, risk management, medical coding, corporate compliance, and data analysis and reporting.  See (www.hicareers.com)

Admissions Information

Admission to the HIMS program is selective.  Applicants are required to have a high school diploma.  The applicant must achieve acceptable COMPASS, ASSET, or ACT scores or complete recommended skill building/prescriptive work, with at least a "C" average, prior to enrolling in HIMS courses.  Applicants transferring from another program of study must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. For further information regarding the Health Information Management program, refer to the Central Community College website (http://www.cccneb.edu). 


  • Additional program costs include student in practicum insurance and a background check.
  • Minimum Grade Requirement:  Students enrolled in HIMS must achieve a minimum "C" grade in all courses to successfully graduate from the program.  Students who do not meet the minimum grade will be required to repeat the course.  In addition, a higher-level course, which requires the course as a prerequisite, may not be taken until satisfactory completion is achieved.

Typical Program of Study

To assist students in determining the sequence of courses they might take to complete their educational goal, the proposed program of study is provided.   A student's final program of study will be influenced by factors such as placement test scores, prior college experiences, course availability, transfer requirements, program admission requirements, and special areas of interest.  A student intending to major in this program must consult with his/her adviser prior to any academic planning and registering.
